Newborn screening aims at detecting treatable metabolic disorders. Identifying babies who are at risk but have not yet developed typical symptoms helps to introduce rapid therapeutic measurements and to prevent severe clinical symptoms.
Our screening programme includes the maximal number of conditions that can be reliably detected by modern techniques. In 1999 we introduced tandem mass spectrometry (TMS) so that the screening programme has since been greatly expanded.
